Well, Capt. Jon,
I went on a cross town adventure to see the stunning if not brilliant Frida, the latest from puppet master Julie Taymor.
The diminutive Salma Hayek turns in a great performance of commanding breasts... er... breadth. Wow. She is so much prettier than Frida Kahlo. Of course I bet in some ways Frida was like 300 times sexier than Salma. Also she might have been taller. Did anyone know Hayek was so short? She's like 3'4".
Even though it's weird to see her head as the young Frida, it's convincing that she's twelve. Maybe she is. Maybe that's why actresses seem to begetting dumber. They're just all 12.
The real star of the show is Alfred Molina. Consistently one of the best living actors, I hope he gets recognized soon for his amazing talent. His work is nuanced, believable, and tender. Like a crap on a rainy afternoon after softshell crabs. Perfect with a hint of the ocean.
I recommend the film. The puppet things are surprisingly distracting for someone who made her whole career on glorified muppets, but the portrayals steer clear of melodrama and as a comedy this thing works. Funny lines from a funny lady. (I think I am going to make that my new catchphrase.)
Go see it. Don't waste your time with I-Spy. Terd Alert is high on that one.
Funny things from a funny lady,
Bewley, Out.
