CONSUMER COMPLAINT: Dear Dr. Burt...   PDF  Print  E-mail
by Matteo Costa

You’re familiar with Dr. Burt’s Beeswax, right? It's that shit that everybody's smearing on their lips these days. It smells a little minty with a hint of comfrey.  Anyway, those blokes make a full line of Natural Hygiene products.  I am complaining about their Lavender Mint toothpaste.

They changed to recipe on me--well, us really! I mean I don't think anyone else liked the toothpaste as much as I did, but still, if they're going to change the way their products taste, I think they should let the consumer know.

The “Original’s” Ingredients:  1. Filtered water,                          2. vegetable glycerin, 3. calcium carbonate (chalk), 4. bentonite (natural clay), 5. ratany root extract, 6. peppermint oil, (9)7. spearmint oil, (10)8. anise oil, (11)9. sage oil, (13)10. eucalyptus globulus leaf oil, (14)11. geranium oil, (15)12. lavender oil, (6)13. clove stem oil Zanzibar, (16)14.yucca extract, (17)15. xanthan gum (natural thickener), (7)16. menthol. (12)The Original’s Ingredients: 1. Purified water, 2. vegetable glycerin, 3. calcium carbonate (chalk), 4. bentonite (clay),
5. krameria extract,
6. lavender oil,
7. xanthan gum, 8. cranberry extract, 9. peppermint oil,
10. spearmint oil,
11. anise oil,
12. menthol,
13. sage oil,
14. eucalyptus oil,
15. geranium oil,
16. clove oil,
17. yucca schidigera extract. This color denotes a decline in quality.  In this case it’s Purified water vs. Filtered.  There is a
distinction: e.g. I’ve been using the same Brita® filter for months now—it’s long expired.  My water is not purified, though technically, it is filtered. This color draws attention to movement within the list from old to new, which to me, indicates flavor change and I assume, is responsible for it as well. (The italicized numbers in the left column refer respective former positions. This color is, at first, the most alarming because I thought you’d added a totally new
ingredient and put it high on the list.  I did some research on ratany root and it’s just a less-aesthetically appealing way of saying krameria root(.  Why? Well, first the word “rat” is there and then, if you Google “ratany root” to find out what the heck it is, its use shows up on a website called “Everything You Wanted to Know About Hemorrhoids.”
This color just means you decided to scrap it entirely from the recipe. Who knows why?  Aren’t   cranberries good for everything?
