KML Picks The "Best of 2005"!   PDF  Print  E-mail

Everywhere you look in the media these days--you see best of lists. Rolling Stone, Ebert and Roeper, U.S. News and World Report... "The best this and that of the year that was!" Well, we felt like we wanted to reserve a little real estate on this online destination and tell you a bit about what we liked. Click on the 'read below' sign right below here to see what some of the Lobsters voted 'best of 2005.' This is a partial list at the moment and it will be updated very soon with picks of more members of the group!

These are in no particular order...

Paul Charney1. What was your favorite book/thing read of 2005? Middlesex.

2. What was your favorite CD/recording of 2005? I can pretty much put either interpol album on and listen to it. So good. I'll say it...better than Joy Division.

3. What was your favorite film of 2005? Ok. Here is my list.

CapoteMunichMe, you and everyone we knowSyrianna40 Year Old VirginThe Squid and the whale

I'm pretty sure I've missed a lot of good movies this year. Which is weird. But true. Got some good netflix coming. Will report later.

4. What piece of pop culture that you have consumed in 2005 would you in NO WAY recommend to a friend? (this can be a book, film, CD, or something else you call pop culture) This is a tough one. Because I going to implicate myself...but I Entourage. It is a horrible show that I can't stop watching. It's the most annoying show filled with the most annoying characters.

5. What's one thing you would change about 2005 if you could? I'd like to change the republican congress. Because they are protecting an administration that is crippling this country, damaging other nations and devastating the environment.

6. What will be your most significant lasting memory of 2005? KML performing in NYC(my hometown).

7. What's one prediction for 2006? This will be the year of auteur again in film... Check out this list of directors with movies coming out... Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Alexander Payne, David Russell, spike jonze,, michel gondry, sofia coppola, Steven Soderbergh, Richard Linklater. But the reality is that their movies will be mediocre and make their fans say 'shit, that was nowhere as good as their (enter director's second film).

Andrew Bancroft
1. What was your favorite book/thing read of 2005?I'm a late bloomer, but i'm now a full on Harry Potter addict. I tried to resist and stay in my muggle hideaway on Privet Drive (Potrero Hill), but this shizzle just sucks you in with it's imaginative brilliance and 3rd-grade reading level. Anyone want to start a mountain bike Quidditch team?

2. What was your favorite CD/recording of 2005?I was lucky to get an early listen to "Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star", the newest from bay area's folk juggernaut Sean Hayes. It's beautiful. Check him at: www.seanhayesmusic.com. Best single of the year goes to 50 Cent for "Hate it or Love it". Bump dat shit!

3. What was your favorite film of 2005?Um... if we can only name one, then i'm gonna combine my three favorites and let you figure them out: "Me and You and Everyone Corpse Kong".

4. What piece of pop culture that you have consumed in 2005 would you in NO WAY recommend to a friend? (this can be a book, film, CD, or something else you call pop culture)Cinderella Man. Russell Crowe can breathe my farts for the rest of his career. He loves playing these impossible, flawless pillars of manliness and honor. And in real life? dick. head. Well, maybe that's not fair, because i don't really know him. But i googled "Russell Crow Asshole" after i wrote that to find stuff to justify my disgruntlement. Pretty funny. A-hole or no, King Kong was way more developed than Crowe's character... and wait... isn't he?... yes... he's a computer-generated monkey.

5. What's one thing you would change about 2005 if you could? The name. So predictable... "Two Thousand and Five." How about this, baby: "Cool Thousand and Jive." Peeps would still know what you're talking about, but it would just be a little more... heyyyy.

6. What will be your most significant lasting memory of 2005?You mean the most significant lasting memory that's appropriate to print? Probably joining the Lobsters. Thanks guys!

7. What's one prediction for 2006?More crap from Russell Crowe.

Daniel Lee1. What was your favorite book/thing read of 2005?"Lamb and Jelly" by Peter Nachtrieb2. What was your favorite CD/recording of 2005?CD: "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah," Clap Your Hands SayYeah; and "Apologies to the Queen Mary," Wolf Paradesingle: "You Broke My Heart," Lavender Diamond3. What was your favorite film of 2005?"The Squid and the Whale," "Brokeback Mountain," and "The 40 Year Old Virgin"4. What piece of pop culture that you have consumed in 2005 would you
in NO WAY recommend to a friend? (this can be a book, film, CD, or
something else you call pop culture)"Elizabethtown" was the worst piece of shit I have seen in a long, long time
5. What's one thing you would change about 2005 if you could?I would have gone to my college reunion.6. What will be your most significant lasting memory of 2005?The chin trauma I sustained due to a bout of rigorous making out.
7. What's one prediction for 2006?I will finally realize my dream of becoming a professional tennis player.Sally Garbarini
1. What was your favorite book/thing read of 2005?The Blue Cross Service Agreement and Combined Evidence of Coverage and Disclosure Form (all 48 gripping pages)
2. What was your favorite CD/recording of 2005?Supergrass, Supergrass is 10: Best of 94 to 043. What was your favorite film of 2005? Capote4. What piece of pop culture that you have consumed in 2005 would you in NO WAY recommend to a friend? (this can be a book, film, CD, or something else you call
pop culture)Any episode of 'Strange Love with Bridgette Nielson & Flavor Flav' on VH1 (honorable mention: Mariah Carey videos)
5. What's one thing you would change about 2005 if you could? A better levee in New Orleans before Katrina. And maybe not getting hit by a car.6. What will be your most significant lasting memory of 2005? There were a lot this year. The only way I could pick one is to summarize them all. My lasting memory of 2005 will be a sense of gratitude for my life, health, family and friends, not to mention the overwhelming power of laughter. 7. What's one prediction for 2006? Fewer catastrophic events. Impeachment. Generally speaking, less tears, more ta-tas. Andy Alabran

1. Favorite book read?

Well, I reread David Sedaris' "Naked". He's so hilarious. Inspiring.2. Favorite cd of 2005?I'm ashamed to say I rarely get out there and buy cd's. I did go out and buy the cd of "Cabaret" when I was auditioning for that. But, honestly, my fav cd came from Jon Wolanske during "Killing My Lobster Kisses a Toad". It's a great mix. And it has this great song on it that I can't remember the title to but it's got a Latin beat to it!3. Favorite Film of 2005?"The Incredibles" which I saw on DVD and got to see all the special features behind the scenes at Pixar. I'm a huge fan of Pixar (I nearly wet my pants when we performed a KML fundraiser at a board member's home only to find out one of them worked at Pixar) . I love Pixar's attention to detail and that their stories have plots and there are truly touching and also hilarious moments in their films.
4. What piece of pop culture from the year gone by would you NOT RECOMMEND to friends and family?Only addictive personalities should sign up on MySpace.com
5. If you had one thing to change about 2005...I think I would change my president. He seemed to get by with no major debilitating illnesses.
6. What lasting memory will you take with you from the year?I have a couple lasting memories. One of them being my birthday. The Lobsters made it real special. I normally go under the radar with my birthday, but this year I was in a hit show. And I kinda thought: oh, those guys will probably just sing to me in the dressing room. But it was SO MUCH more! So thoughtful. I got some flowers, then cupcakes before the show, then I got the song again at curtain call(!!), then a birthday hotdog at midnight, then some drinks, then some dancin'. Good times. My other memory was working on "Cyrano". Damn, that was magical for me. I love performing in that park. And such a beautiful play. I was truly lucky to work on that with such talented folks. And I particularly remember this older couple who came to see the play three times. And I remember smoking with the woman playing Roxanne before the show.7. Prediction for 2006:I predict there will be another country to legalize gay marriage. There's Canada and Spain. And I think someone else will follow suit. I don't think it'll be the U.S. Probably a European country.

Tonya Glanz1. What was your favorite book/thing read of 2005?I loved Middlesex. But I'd have to say one of my favorite things read this year was the boyscout letter featured in "Killing My Lobster Nothing is Original". **Exploding asterisk.** And spying on myspace ( a.k.a. 'Spyspace') always provides hours of entertainment. 2. What was your favorite CD/recording of 2005? Hands down, Kanye West, "Late Registration" I played that album more than any white girl should. Honorable mentions-Fiona Apple, "Extraordinary Machine,"M.I.A., "Arular,"Franz Ferdinand, "You could have it so much better." Swingin Singles: "Hung up"-Madonna, "Don't Cha"-Pussycat Dolls, "Huddle Formation" The Go! Team, "Ordinary People" John Legend, "Dare & Feel good Inc.", The Gorillaz. And probably many more I can't recall at 9:35 A.M. 3. What was your favorite film of 2005? You're killin me. It may still be Eternal Sunshine, though that was '04. Alright, alright.... A tie between The Squid and the Whale and Brokeback Mountain. Also... King Kong, Me, You, and Everyone we know, 40-year-old-virgin, Capote, Walk the Line, Crash, Jarhead, and Sin City. 4. What piece of pop culture that you have consumed in 2005 would you in NO WAY recommend to a friend? (this can be a book, film, CD, or something else you call
pop culture) Anything featuring or having to do with Paris Hilton. She's terrible. And I would know, I fucked her! Go Away! She sucks. She dresses horrendously, she's a bitch, she's tacky, she's a bad lay, she's a terrible actor and I am sure once her album drops we will hear what a horrible singer she is. If you are going to shamelessly promote yourself as a rich talentless whore, at least do something good with your money, like donate it to charities or volunteer to make tiaras for third world children. And if we absolutely must worship a socialite, at least Nicole Richie has a sense of humor and style. So what if she's anorexic? Paris is completely useless, and I hope we shift back to obsessing over women who are graceful and smart. Or raunchy with a great sense of humor.
5. What's one thing you would change about 2005 if you could? Less Paris (Hilton). And not to have eaten that entire basket of Cajun popcorn shrimp. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr.......
6. What will be your most significant lasting memory of 2005? The KML to NYC trip in June was pretty great. Also going to Amsterdam and getting the hell out of State College! **Addendum**-Celebs I met/spotted/smoked weed with this year:David Cross, David Allen Grier, Greg Proops, Maggie Gyllenhall, Mario Cantone, Jon J. ("Manhunt"), James Franco, Jason Alexander (Brit's first husband), John Malkovich, Tommy Lee, Chris Weber, Billy Crudup, Michael Showalter, Colin Quinn, Hal Sparks, Joley Fisher, Connie Stevens More that I can't remember... 7. What's one prediction for 2006?I will meet more celebs. Marc Vogl1. What was your favorite book/thing read of 2005?Indecision - Benjamin Kunkel
2. What was your favorite CD/recording of 2005?Blackout Party 'Music for the Kitchen' Playlist - as placed on my Nano by DJ Wolanske3. What was your favorite film of 2005?Broken Flowers - finally a Jim Jarmusch film whose appeal I don't have to qualify. It's lyrical, beautiful, sad and wry and at this point in his career Bill Murray should know that I will pay $10 anytime to see him in a track suit sleeping face-down on a couch dreaming about where life goes wrong.Bonus: favorite new comedy discovery: Little Britain.4. What piece of pop culture that you have consumed in 2005 would you in NO WAY recommend to a friend? (this can be a book, film, CD, or something else you call pop culture)Escapism. As a concept it's to be avoided from here on out. No more refuge in the unreal when there is so much excitement and dread and deliriousness to be had without vacationing into anyone else's fabricated world....especially, if it involves celebrities, let's give that shit a rest.
5. What's one thing you would change about 2005 if you could?I wish I'd done a better job having lunch. I realized I can't be trusted to remember that meal if left to my own devices. Too many light-headed 4 o'clock burritos trying to make up for missed opportunities.6. What will be your most significant lasting memory of 2005?In the real world: happening to walk by ground zero in New York around midnight the day that New Orleans drowned. In the Lobster world:-seeing the Make Out room packed to the absolute gills for the best-of show fundraiser in May-turning an old lady away from the sold out screening of "Piece by Piece" (at the Red Vic during the hilo film festival) as she shook her cane and said for me and all the graffiti kids to hear "I walked all the way up the hill for this!"-marvelling at Alex and Josh as they danced from ladder to ladder in assembling the Wonderful World of Science set at the Victoria-nervously watching a fire marshall inspect the backstage of the Noh Space during a performance of "Killing My Lobster Kisses A Toad"-the inadvertent a capella finale to a performance of "Killing My Lobster Nothing Is Original"-lugging speakers and turntables with Paul through miles of subway tunnels and all the way across Brooklyn on the hottest day of the year-Stephen Kalmakis telling me that Paul had been detained by the Santa Cruz Boardwalk police for attempting to film a rollercoaster ride without a permit. All good times in the name of comedy. In my friend Boaz's world: hatching the idea for a company called 'Tub Toonz' that would produce music to bathe too. This was part of a larger ambition to make taking baths the new hipster thing to do.

7. What's one prediction for 2006?All our 9s shall be 10s.
Jon Wolanske1. Favorite book/thing read in 2005?I enjoyed Blink by Malcolm Gladwell-if only for the fact that it champions 'split second' decision-making and first impressions as methods of decision-making that are sometimes even more effective than those based on several levels of in-depth study and thought. So when someone shoves me on BART or cuts in line ahead of me, my reaction of "that guy is a fucking dick" is entirely warranted and an utterly spot-on read of his true character. 2. Favorite CD of 2005?Kings of Leon-'Aha Shake Heartbreak'-got a mighty workout in my stereo this past year. I also really like the soundtrack to the film Broken Flowers. 3. Favorite film of the year?2005 was a pretty great year for movies. Since I have a hard time choosing one, I will dodge the question by providing my favorite movie moments of the year: --The waxing scene and the closing credits from 'The 40 Year-Old Virgin"--The Folsom Prison concert scene from "Walk the Line"--Bill Murray eating carrots at the dinner table in "Broken Flowers"--The party scenes from "Capote"--The scenes in "The Squid and the Whale" featuring the music samples from "Risky Business"--Anne Hathaway's wig work in "Brokeback Mountain"--The Dennis Haysbert 'morning dump' scene in "Jarhead"--The odd and irritatingly arresting mouth movement of Christian Bale when in the batsuit in "Batman Begins"
4. Piece of popular culture you would in NO WAY recommend to a friend from the year 2005.I am gonna risk upsetting some folks with this one, but I can't really help it. Despite how great of a bargain iTunes is, for folks interested in buying entire albums I think I'd recommend going to the record store over buying online. Not only do I find the experience of being in the store and walking around the music much more satisfying, but I miss the artwork and the packaging that goes into creating those label-created CDs. There is - to me - something less special about playing the new John Legend album when I look at the copy I burned off of iTunes-in my crappy chickenscratch, done up in a crazy bubblefont that is in no way matches the charm or quality of the music that's on the disc.
5. What one thing would you change about 2005 if you could?I would have done a lot less emailing-and more phone-calling. That's my major addiction to kick or cut down on in 2006. 6. Lasting memory from the year that was 2005:Getting the crowd to line-dance at the NYC bar Siberia in June; Seeing some members of my family finally get to see a KML show (the NYC set) in June was also pretty cool; Forcing unsuspecting friends and others to play Melanie's "Smile-eyes; smile-no-eyes; blank face, etc." game in public; driving home late after a party with Paul and Boaz and imitating rude Englishmen; having my brother sit in awe of Tonya's appetite at Thanksgiving; finding out that Mustaches for Kids raised a record--$10,000-this year. 7. Prediction for 2006.I predict that people I know all over will get kind of spiritual this year. Not necessarily in a prayer or church-attending sort of way. I just believe that people I know will wake up to some unexpected things they never fully recognized... things that move them and in 2006, they will realign accordingly. And fart more.
