Killing My Lobster Theater (“KML”) is recruiting its next Executive Director!  

Killing My Lobster creates fast, smart, fearless sketch comedy that makes people laugh. KML produces new live shows monthly, teaches sketch comedy writing and acting classes, produces corporate shows and workshops and has been bringing the Bay Area some serious funny for over 20 years.

This is an amazing opportunity to help build upon the incredible growth and success of past years.  KML has an annual operating budget of approximately $350,000 and a 3 to 5 year vision for an operating budget of over $1 million per year, with plans to secure its own dedicated theater space and to continue to increase attendance and awareness locally and nationally.


Position Summary

The Executive Director is responsible for engaging our community, donors and volunteers in promoting and delivering a sketch comedy theater experience guided by its mission and core values while ensuring financial stability and continued growth of the Organization. 

The Executive Director is the chief spokesperson for KML, representing the organization to its many internal and external communities.  Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will direct and oversee all functions of KML as well as manage the staff; currently an Artistic Director and Managing Director. This is a hands-on full-time position with benefits, with primary responsibilities of fundraising, business development and delivering on the strategic plan and vision to grow KML.



Fundraising, Business Development & External Relations

  • Leads and supports all KML annual development, fundraising, business development and capital campaign programs and activities, with a focus on increasing the donor, foundation and corporate sponsorship and earned income base as well as improving fundraising methods and operating systems.  Responsible for planning and implementing fundraising strategies, researching, soliciting and securing gifts and continual cultivation and stewardship of individual and major donors, foundations, sponsors and corporate partners, corporate private shows and develop/oversee all fundraising events.


Some of the key duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Drafts and/or reviews all grant related letters of inquiry, applications, rewards and reports, donor newsletters, fundraising speeches and schedules for KML productions.

  • Manages all VIP patrons and donor acknowledgement letters.  

  • Development and presentation of pitch decks for the production of corporate shows and workshops.  

  • The Executive Director attends most KML productions, meets with VIP and major donors and shares the responsibility with the Artistic Director in making the fundraising speech at shows.  
  • Oversee general public relations, communication, education, and outreach functions. The Executive Director in conjunction with the Artistic Director will represent KML to the general public through speaking engagements, publicity and the development of written informational/promotional materials while overseeing the development of an overall public relations/communications strategy.


Operational & Financial Management

  • Oversee all day-to-day operational and financial management functions of KML, working with the Artistic Director and staff to ensure successful productions and programs that are within budget. This includes supervision of staff, negotiation and execution of contracts, theater space, management of KML’s resources, maintenance of accounting systems and preparation of financial reports.  The Artistic Director has the responsibility and authority for all production and program planning and creative decisions.  However, the Artistic Director will include the Executive Director in all discussions of short-term and long-term program planning, the execution of which will be a collaborative process.

  • Responsible for and manages all educational programming, budgeting, financial modeling and policies with the Managing Director and ensures alignment with the teaching philosophies and values set for by “The KML School of Comedy”.  Responsible for the recruiting and contracting of KML teachers and teacher Assistants.  During the initial transition and onboarding period of approximately 3-6 months these responsibilities will be covered by the Artistic Director.

  • In collaboration with the Managing Director, oversees and implements appropriate resources, systems, and processes to ensure that the office/rehearsal/classroom spaces of the organization are well maintained.


Board Governance & Strategic Planning

  • Work with the Board of Directors in developing and evaluating the annual budget, strategic plan, goals and objectives.  The Executive Director will drive the annual budget and strategic planning process and implement the plan developed in order to fulfill the organization’s mission and core values.  Provide administrative leadership for and staff support to the Board, its committees and the Board of Advisors. Attend all Board meetings, committee meetings as requested and perform other Board liaison functions as needed.



  • Five or more years of nonprofit leadership experience including researching, cultivating, soliciting, securing, stewarding and growing contributed income from individuals, major donors, foundations, corporations and government agencies for organizations with an operating budget of at least $500,000 - $1 million.  

  • Demonstrated successful experience developing, implementing and managing a capital or major operational/annual fund campaign

  • Experience writing foundation, corporate and governmental LOIs, grant proposals and reports.

  • Demonstrated experience significantly growing a nonprofit organization

  • Experience creating business development pitch decks, Board presentations and financial statement summaries

  • Excellent public speaking/presentation skills

  • Excellent organizational, fiscal and personnel management and mentoring skills

  • Demonstrated love of theater and strong commitment and alignment to KML’s mission, goals and vision.

  • Management of a nonprofit arts organization is a plus

  • Experience with Quickbooks Online and E-Tapestry is a plus
