1. Best CD of 2001 - CDs are dead. It's all in the mp3s, and the best one is Shuggie Otis,
Gospel Groove.
2. Best thing I read in 2001 - This, from an online personals ad:
"I have mystical experiences while reading critical theory, dance barefoot, paint naked, and take my
education far too seriously... I just let my subsciption to Science News Weekly run out, but still have Shamballa
Sun, Utne Reader, and Hip Mama (I'm not one, but eventually will be). I do an art-sport called
'contact improvisation' (not kidding) several times a week, am much happier than I look in my
photo, and know the workings of my own heart intimately."
Bewley says: uh yeah...let's hang out.
3. Best Movie I saw in 2001 - It's a tie - Ghost World and American Astronaut
4. Best comedy (theater, tv, film, accidental comedy
on the street, sketch...etc) I saw in 2001 - When Jon and I went to see Nocturne - I was at
the urinal and some old guy in the stall was letting a couple noisy ones go. It was cracking me up.
5. Snack food of the year - Memphis Minnie's Tri-tip sandwich, sides: Mac and Cheese
and sweet potatoes - that's a Bewley snack.
6. Best discovery of 2001 - Personal Hovercrafts and Osama's Mama jokes.
7. Best fashion/accessory of 2001 - Bedazzled red white and blue.
8. Dot-com you were glad to say goodbye to in the year
2001 - Petopia.com - that made no sense - but I should also say that the discontinuation
of Old Navy Pets is also a much heralded event at my home. C'mon America, wake up!
9. Your personal catch-phrase for this past year - "That's so weird."
10. A prediction for the year 2002 - I'm not real clear - but I think it will involve pugs,
Jack Benny, and cloning.
Paul Charney
1. Best CD - I haven't really listened to much music this year. The New
Pornograpers is a band I listened to a lot this year. But I bought
their cd at the end of last year.
2. Best thing I read - Finally finsihed Stephen Ambrose's Lewis and Clark's book.
3. Best Movie - Best movie is tough. But for now I am going to say Waking Life.
Jeez what else came out this year?
4. Best Comedy - I think the funniest thing that happened to me was Brian Jones
attemtpting to explain to me what "Upside Down fun" is.
Close second a sketch that "class project" did up at the seattle
sketchfest. The sketch involved them talking amongst themselves and
realizing that the audience has been listening the whole time.
5. Snack food of the year - Kit Kat bites. So good. So movie friendly.
6. Best Discovery - The thing I have discovered is that Major League baseball needs a
salary cap very very badly. And that Jason Giambi is a coward. He had
an opportunity to be bigger than baseball, and he took the money and
went to the Yankees. I discovered that baseball is dead.
7. Fashion accessory - James' Oakland Raider hat.
8. Dot-com you were glad to say goodbye to - This is hard. I think all dot-com's offered something right? But
we pitched a company called rooster.com. This pretty much was b2b
service for people in the agricultural world. Just found out that
it's dead.
9. Catch-phrase - It's an oldy but goody "I'm not even supposed to be here."
10. Prediction for 2002 - I predict that there will be a child actor who America will fall
in love with. That child may even get on the cover of a national
publication like People for example.
Daniel Lee

Releases that might as well have been new to me since I don't live in New York or Los Angeles and
was in neither of those places when these movies came out in time for last year's Oscar consideration,
not that they won anything anyway (but should have because they were so awesome)...

3. Best Movie -
2001: A Space Odyssey. Yeah, and it's 2001. Trippy,
dude.
4. Best comedy (theater, tv, film, accidental comedy
on the street, sketch...etc) I saw in 2001 -
Brian dancing like a harem girl in the performance
hall of the spiritual center in Ukiah. Oh, or when
Paul didn't see the screen door at the retreat and
crashed through it in an enthusiastic and spaztic
attempt to get all up in the hot tub.

Candy, candy, candy. Or apples. Yeah, apples. See,
Momma, I'm healthy!
6. Best discovery of 2001 -
Chicago and New Orleans.
7. Best fashion/accessory of 2001 -
My brown crocheted hat. If you haven't seen me wearing
it, you haven't seen me. Mad by a flava girl at
Storyville. Damn, the hat gets compliments!
8. Dot-com you were glad to say goodbye to -
I love the internet and am only sad to see Web sites
fail.
9. Your personal catch-phrase for this past year -
"Also for you!" (This phrase is said in response to
someone telling you that they have something for you.
i.e. "There were many cute boys at that party for
you!" To which you reply, "Also for you!" with a loud
and unidentifiable Eastern European accent. Without
the accent, don't bother.)
10. A prediction for the year 2002 -
I will rock.
11. Best friends -
My lobster babies, Christine, Mir,
Becky, Jen and Bev, Kit Cat, Double A, the New York

love goes back to you.

Together, Moulin Rouge, The Royal Tenenbaums, In the Mood for Love.
4. Best comedy -
Being sprayed with 7-Up by vindictive waiter at Yum Yum House and accidentally dumping macaroni
in a coworkers cubicle at a menial temp job. Oh wait that was last year. Oh well. Nothing that
funny happened this year. Comedy that was not an accidental homage to Meg Ryan: Brian Regan,
Lily Tomlin, Bill Irwin, David Shiner, and the 30 Helens.
5. Best New Snackfood -
Pirates Booty
6. Best Old Snackfood -
It's still cheddar cheese, people (better luck next year, Baked Lays!)

1. Best CD -
1-10. Killing My Lobster 'Allegro Con Chutzpah'
(I bought ten copies.)
Also 1-10. Dakota Floyd I heard them practice in a shoebox in Cleveland and they blew me away
like Clint Eastwood. The shit is TIGHT! Listen at
here and buy their EP at
Rags to Records.
2. Best thing I read -
Haruki! Haruki! Haruki! Haruki Murakami
The Wind Up Bird Chronicle - The most sumptuous literary brunch I've munched since Infinite Jest.
Hard Boiled Wonderland - An awesome entre.
Sputnik Sweetheart - A heartbreaking dessert.
Underground - a non-fiction after-dinner drink, and utterly arresting and disturbing and probably important to read while terrorist attacks are on the brain.
3. Best Movie -
Downtown 81 -
Jean Michel Basquiat was a kid with a sense of humor and a rock band.
Amelie - it got me. I was got.
Ghost World - 2 words: blues hammer.
American Astronaut - dance number assassins + extended wet suit joke
Sexy Beast - if everyone acted this well every movie would be awesome.
George Washington - super heroes in the sticks where movies look like dreams.
Brother - Beat Takeshi lays on the beat down. Japanese tough guy nihilism goes to smell A.
The Sacrifice (Tarkovsky) - hope you're not in a rush. The house is burned down twice on the DVD.
Werckmeister Harmonies (Bela Tarr) - hope you're really not in a rush. Fans of melancholy
Europe and the single take scene this is for you (coming to the Castro Feb 1-7).
Goldchains, 'I come from San Francisco' (Fleischer) -
You've got to see it.
4. Best comedy (theater, tv, film, accidental comedy

Erik Watermans backyard video party - Buddy Cianci hosted and Tenacious D made a special appearance.
Mustaches for Kids - charity is serious business; Mike Zurer's
in particular this piece de resistance: mouth mouse
Jorge Just covering 'Bohemian Rhapsody' on a karoke machine at Chris Holmes house somewhere on the
Southside of Chicago at 4 in the morning. This is the kind of magic you wish you could bottle and
then sell lots of bottles of.
Wandering with Drew Bamford through a mid-night typhoon in Paris. That was some ludicrous shit.
5. Best discovery of 2001 -
Sushi in general. Sushi Zone on Pearl @ Market in particular.
What rock have I been under since 1973? Aint no party like an unagi party.
6. Best fashion/accessory of 2001 -
1964 Plymouth Valiant.
7. Epiphany for the 2k1 -
I actually do like San Francisco weather. I dont just like to complain about it
I actually like it. I went to New York in July and after 7 nights of waking up sweaty
(in Steve O's bed no less, but thats another story) I was kinda over the Gershwin-style mid-summer
humidity. And visiting Seattle in early December was not exactly the kind of climactic Shangri-la
I have a hankering for either; which puts me back squarely in the temperate zone: SF. I like it.
And while were talking local highlights, how bout those A's? Huh? Can I get a what-what? Plucky,
scrappy, small-market team thats going to make Giambi regret he traded in his BART pass for pinstripes. Also: dollar dog Wednesdays.
8. Your personal catch-phrase for this past year -
'Edging towards legitimacy.'
9. Best Habit Formed in 2001 -
Putting my keys, wallet, and cell phone down in the same place everytime I come home. This will
add years to my life. Provided I never move.
10. Prediction for 2002 -
I will spend more on motor oil than gas (see fashion accessory).
Jon Wolanske
1. Best CD -
'Is This It' - The Strokes. Sometimes the hype exists to be believed. The basslines alone make
this record air-instrumentable.
Ryan Adams - 'Gold.' Could be mistaken for Jeff Tweedy's younger brother.
Song for song, pound for sonic pound, I think it's the best earnest songwriting of the year.
The Vince Guaraldi Trio - 'A Charlie Brown Christmas.' It's in my stereo right now - and I admit
I am a bit obsessed with it.
okgo - 'unreleased demo.' All that shit I said about The Strokes? Fuhgettabout it. These guys will
rock your ass so hard you will have to get it retrofitted.
2. Best thing I read -
The Onion's September 26 issue. Please someone give these guys a major award.
[Regrets] Extending an Apology - Harper's Magazine - Fall 2001 Education Issue.
The Aenid, by Brian L. Perkins.
The final long chapter of The Corrections.
3. Best Movie -
Memento - My vote for most oddly touching film of the year, strongest argument yet for the Polaroid camera's addition to any urban dweller's everyday routine, and best use of cheekbones.
It also may contain my favorite movie moment from the past year (besides Waking Life's 'Holy Moment') when Guy Pierce pushes the glass door of the motel instead of pulling it open.
In the Mood for Love - What an elegant couple. I would give a lot for that guy's wardrobe.
Oh and I also really enjoyed the film George Washington.
4. Best comedy (theater, tv, film, accidental comedy on the street, sketch...etc) I saw in 2001 -
The gas pumps/Wham! Montage from Zoolander.
Charles Nelson Reilly's many slowburns in 'Save It for the Stage: The Life of Reilly'.
5. Snack food of the year! -
The indestructable Rice Krispie Treat.
6. Best discovery of 2001 -
My father actually made it all the way across country on a freakin' motorcycle!
He is 60 years old. He lives
in Greenfield, Massachusetts.
7. Best fashion/accessory of 2001 -
The red ribbon currently on my bag.
8. Dot-com you were glad to say goodbye to -
Braintrust. Or did it say goodbye to me? Oh yes. It said goodbye to me. Still, that incident was the best thing that could've happened to me last year.
9. Your personal catch-phrase for this past year -
The Yahoo! Instant Messenger Clown Face.
10. A prediction for the year 2002 -
San Francisco will come to its senses and realize that it needs small arts organizations back in a big way and/or
my father will not be attempt to ride out west on a motorcycle.
