DOCUMENTARY PROGRAM I - "Suburbs"
Sunday March 31 @ 4pm

Procastination
Meesoo Lee, Vancouver
Video 6 min
A docu-voyeuristic look at middle-class suburban malaise and lack of perspective, Procrastination is a literal cry in the dark to no one, as a young man makes his midnight confession to the camera regarding his frustration and total inability to complete any school work from the backseat of his parents' car. (Also included in Shorts Program II)

Calling All Cars
Alfonso Alvarez, Berkeley
16mm, 5 min
Recut and recolored found footage and sound explaining the function of police in our society calls into question not only our changing perceptions of law enforcement, but also our methods of teaching basic social concepts to children. (Also included in Shorts Program II)

Strip Mall Trilogy
Roger Beebe Gainsville FL
Super8, 9min
A Super8 specialist points his camera at the signs and symbols of his new hometown, where the tallest building is a four story motel. In three installments the filmmaker displays a ferocious eye for detail and a monumental love of the editing room. (Also included in Shorts Program I)

Standing By Yourself
Josh Koury, Brooklyn
DV, 57min
Somewhere past Alex Cox's Repoman, and to the right of Larry Clark's Kids, is Josh Koury's Standing By Yourself. For one disturbing hour he forces us to follow his younger brother and his high school friends as they negotiate, or fail to negotiate, their teenage disillusionment. In one scene they are just naive, puffing their chests up to fight one another, whining until their mom's give them a few bucks to blow at the mall, and prodding one another to down another bottle of 'tussin while no one is looking. But then suddenly they're all too grown up. Confronting jail time, bitterly racist rhetoric and their own dead end suburban life. Shot on video with an appropriately rough texture and languid pace this film is difficult to watch, which is why we think you should.
