Focusing on cities in general, and San Francisco in particular, these two docs analyze the effects of the e-goldrush on its polarized participants, its unwitting boosters and its unwilling victims. Through the lens of one start-up Dreaming in Code looks at the excited and optimistic set of young, privileged, single, occasionally-raving workaholic entrepreneurs and programmers who literally live in their office. Boom! The Sound of Eviction examines the flip side of that coin; focusing on the struggle of local working class families and seniors to remain in their homes and maintain their community in the face of a flood of evictions triggered by the unprecedented influx of wealthier renters. Together the films demonstrate a nasty truth of the capitalist economy - that financial success often comes at the expense of someone else. Viewed jointly they also reveal the power and potential of various SF communities, and in the wake of the dot-com fallout, the need for these communities to communicate and cooperate in the interests of a building a better, compassionate, and sustainable city.
