Why give?

  • ✽ we believe in the power of comedy✽

Comedy is catharsis. It speaks truth to power, and provides a platform to talk about difficult subjects. It can change the way we think. KML believes comedy makes an impact—and when everyone has a seat at the table, that impact is even more…impactful.

  • ✽we believe in comedy with care✽

Killing My Lobster knows that a healthy arts ecosystem starts with valuing their artists. Unlike many for-profit comedy institutions, KML pays all of our artists for the work they do on our shows. Our process aims to create a safe and productive creative environment. Because the best comedy happens when artists feel supported to take their biggest swings!

  • ✽We believe in Bay Area comedy✽

According to SMU DataArts study of the United States Most Arts-Vibrant Communities of 2024, San Francisco takes the top spot! Killing My Lobster is an integral part of our vibrant comedy and theatre scene, participating in SF Sketchfest every year since 2003, and influencing a generation of funny people. KML puts Bay Area comedy on the map. (Not literally though—mapmakers do that.)

 FAQs

  • Any donation goes straight to our operating expenses. Some examples include:

$300 pays rent for 1 performance

$600 pays our graphic designer for the year

$1500 covers a single Sketch on Speed

An entire show (writers, actors, director, stage manager, choreographer, artist support advocate, understudy, & rent) costs $13,600.

    Any amount helps!

  • Like nearly all nonprofit theatre companies, Killing My Lobster depends on a combination of ticket sales, individual donations, grants, and other revenue (classes, corporate workshops, etc) to cover our expenses. If our tickets cost as much as they would need to to actually cover expenses, no one would be able to afford our tickets—and that would be a bummer.

To keep our ticket pricing accessible, and be able to operate, we need the support of philanthropic and government institutions, and even more importantly, our community!

  • Killing My Lobster has run a variety of different fundraising events over the years.

The biggest fundraiser of the year is Giving Tuesday, taking place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Tune in to KML socials to see a 12-14 hour marathon of fundraising, as KML artists make custom comedy to thank our donors all day long! This year, we’re hoping to raise $35,000.

Sign up for our newsletters, to learn about various galas, bar nights, and other fun and funny fundraising events.

  • The best way you can support KML is to come see our shows, and spread the word! Word-of-mouth is the driver for 80% of our audience members.

    You can also:

    • Become a sponsor, or refer us to potential sponsors

    • Attend (and bring guests!) to our fundraising events

    • Book KML for corporate or school workshops (or recommend us to anyone looking)

    • Talk us up obsessively to your friends and family, to the point where they worry about you
